    Komiks Portfolio Reviews

From the past comics conventions in Philippines, either Komikon or the 2 year old Metro Comic Convention (MCC), there are only few artists who take time to review portfolios of some aspiring Filipino komiks artists. I have few experiences in Komikon two years ago and I don’t know if there were others who asked me for any reviews. I guess there were couple of guys asked on the first Metro Comic Con.

Only few of these artists who were brave enough to get criticized by pros. That’s alright, I guess as long as you know what mistakes you are drawing. It won’t break a bone if few advices from the pros, right?

I have no problem with portfolio reviews as long as an artist can take the “okray” from me. Well, I’m not that evil to say bad things about your work. I’ve been there and I know how it felt. Just be sure you’ll grow from the advices and tips we give to you.

Tools of trades? It doesn’t matter. If you’re a penciller, you don’t need a good paper for your pencil works as long as we can understand what you’re drawing.

What pencil? Again as long as we can see what’s drawn on the paper.

What paper? Now that’s quite a problem if you’re going to ask me coz I’m an inker. For me, I use papers that are not very smooth or glossy. As long as the lead of the pencil will write on it that’s fine with me. What will concern me will be the inking on the papers I use.

When showing your pencilled drawings/portfolios (or any artworks), the few advices I can give is to just SHUT UP and LISTEN. There were artists when they drop their porfolio in front of us, they’ll say lots of excuses with their works. You are there to show work and be advised and listen to our tips, not defend your work so we can agree how you did well. So DON’T. :)

Anyway, I guess PORTFOLIO REVIEWS in Komikon or MCC would be great. This is (for me) a good start so we can produce better komiks—artwise. Coz sometimes we see great ideas and story with their comics but need some little improvements in artworks.

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS includes writing, pencilling, inking, coloring and even lettering. So it’s going to be great if an hour or two of portfolio review by the pros in our comics conventions would be awesome! Let’s help each other to produce better komiks. ;) Of course, THIS IS FREE! :D

I’ll be on the first day of MCC2010 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm only. I will be doing signings and sketches somewhere at the Comic Odyssey or Komikero Publishing table.

You can give your advance sketch commissions directly to me or via Comic Odyssey days before the event or you can request on the day of the event.

The price of the sketch commissions will be ranging from P500 to P1,000. All P500 sketches can be fully inked or pencil only, you can suggest which one you like. For a grand Peso rate is fully inked with gray Copic marker applied. Here’s a sample of a sketch with Copic marker used.

    Mrs. Marvel
Mrs. Marvel – Copic markers commission…fail?

I don’t know what happened here. I think the drawing sucks, maybe because I rushed it. I enjoyed testing the Copic markers though. :D

Tools: mechanical pencils with HB leads, Kneaded eraser, Uni-pin pens, Sailor brush pens, and Copic Markers.

It’s another latest commission, which I totally enjoy. There are still commissions to be done but new project caught me. I’ve been thinking if whether to work on the project and commissions simultaneously. :D

When a mutant commits a mysterious murder in Wakanda, Storm takes it upon herself to investigate. And what she discovers will force her into a position where she must choose: Will she stand with the X-Men or with her husband? The Black Panther, ruler of Wakanda, is being held captive and the military might of his entire kingdom has been turned on the one person who could free him: his wife and queen, Storm. But if Storm chooses to fight her fellow Wakandans and rescue her husband, she does so at a cost: she may not be able to save her teammates, the X-Men, who are in similar peril halfway around the world. Writer Chris Yost (X-FORCE, NEW X-MEN) and up-and-coming artist DIOGENES NEVES pose the question: Does Storm stand by the Black Panther or the X-Men?
